Neustadt am Kulm

Whether coming from the South or North, West or East the small city between the Volcanoes, Neustadt am Kulm can be spotted from afar: It looks similar to a toy box that has just been unpacked. In the year 1119 it was mentioned in documents for the first time. Under the burgrave Friedrich V. von Nuremberg Neustadt obtained “city rights and right of escort“ from Emperor Charles V. In 1413 the Carmelites built the beautiful gem of the Klosterkirche (Monastary Church). Its richly decorated vaulted ceiling and famous epitaphs on graves it is considered one of the most beautiful evangelic baroque churches in Bavaria.

Art buffs will especially enjoy the Mockersdorf St. Michael parish church. The tiny city’s geographical as well as historical landmark is the mountain "Rauher Kulm" which is located at the eastern edge of the city.

Adventure seekers on small paths leading through basalt boulders and Volcanic pipe climbs reaching far into the heavens will find spectacular views from the lookout tower which extend over the colourful landscape and red roofs of the small City of Neustadt to the Fichtel Mountains and to Franconian Switzerland. And whether visitors enjoy comfortable strolls through the forest or exciting hikes in high altitudes along the hiking trails of the Kulm Forest, there is always a variety of activities available in this low mountain landscape.
