Neustadtl an der Donau

The market community of Neustadtl an der Donau is approx. 15 km from the largest stream in central Europe, the Market itself lies on an attractive granite plateau of the “Neustadtler Platte”. The name Neustadtl appeared for the first time in a document in 1215: “Niwenstat”- which means new settlement site. The parish was founded in 1147.

The landscape is characterized by numerous crags and boulders. An especially romantic section of the Danube bike route Passau-Vienna leads through the Neustadtler Strudengau. A ferry connects the community of Neustadtl with the old mariner’s town of Grein. The 6.5 km-long theme trail “The path is the goal... Pilgrimaging on the Way of St. James in Neustadtl” gives much insight to visitors about the Way of St. James from the Austrian border near Hainburg to the end point in Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The listed vicarage, the late Gothic constructed parish, dedicated to St. James, the early baroque George column in the graveyard and the Jakobsplatz with the entrance to the theme trail are landmarks of the town. Additional attractions are the homeland museum “Nadlingerhof”, the ruin of Freyenstein, the abandoned silver mine “Silberluck’n” and the Brandstetter's mountain shelter.

A lovely view in the Alps from Schneeberg to the Traunstein leave hearts of hikers beating faster. Posted trails, with the occasional local restaurant and many sightseeing attractions invite visitors to a hiking experience set in unique serene surroundings.
