Nové Mésto pod Smrkem (Neustadt an der Tafelfichte)

Nové Mésto pod Smrkem is the administrative, economic and cultural centre of the northern part of Frydlant. The city was founded in 1584 by the rulers of Frydlant, Melchior von Rodern, for the miners, which mined tin and copper ore in the nearby mountains. In the 19th century mining was replaced by textile production. This brought the city an economic upswing in the end.

The city is located at the foot of the highest mountain Smrk (table spruce) in the Jizera Mountains. The Church of St. Catherine from 1607, which was renovated between 1821 and 1829 is just one sightseeing attraction there. In the city Nové Mésto pod Smrkem the villages Ludvikov (Lusdorf) and Hajniste (Hegewald) are incorporated. Ludviko with the Church of St. Peter and Paul from 1346 is the oldest village in Frydlant.

The city offers visitors a spectacular outdoor public pool with bungalows, excursions can also be made on foot, by bike and in winter with skis (cross country) in the beautiful Iser Mountains, to the mountain Tafelfichte and to the rocky peaks Tisina and Palicnik . Numerous hiking trails invite for strolls in the foreland of the acidulous spring and to the world famous giant barrel. A visit to the castle in Frydlant and a drive to Liberec on the Jeschken as well as in the Animal and Botanical Garden should also be interesting.
