Cristian/Neustadt

‘Neustadt in Burzenland’ - today: Cristian
The municipality of Neustadt was founded in 1200 by German immigrants from the Luxembourg region. The municipality was given the name Neustadt or, in Latin, Nova Civitas. It was given the name Neustadt / Cristian (Villa Cristiani) in 1367 and since then the municipality has been known under two names, the Romanian name Cristian and the German name Neustadt. On the Transylvanian map from 1532 by Johannes Honterus, it appears as ‘neustat’, drawn next to ‘corona’ (Kronstadt, Braşov). Neustadt/Cristian is located 7 kilometres away from Kronstadt/Brașov within the metropolis of Brașov.

As it lies on the eastern border of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the municipality suffered a lot from raids from beyond the Carpathians. It only experienced major development after 1700.

Special features include the Protestant fortified church of Neustadt/Cristian (1270), the medieval neighbourhood, the Romanian Orthodox church (1795) and the square with the century-old ponds. As the municipality is located between the Bucegi Mountains, Piatra Craiului și Postăvarul/Schuler, there are many opportunities for leisure activities, winter sports and hiking. You can also visit the fortified churches of the neighbouring villages, the castles and palaces and the unique bear reserve of Europe.
