The working group mourns the loss of Hans Schreyegg

The Neustadt in Europe working group mourns the loss of its long-standing chairman and most recently honorary chairman Hans Schreyegg, who played a key role in shaping the successful history of the Neustadt movement.
As a member of the city council of Neustadt an der Waldnaab, Hans Schreyegg was able to attend the first meetings in 1979 in Bad Neustadt an der Saale, Neustadt an der Aisch and Neustadt in Holstein. For 1982, he received an invitation from his home town of Neustadt an der Waldnaab. He was in charge of preparing the Neustadt meeting. He had observed some unfavorable developments critically and vigilantly, fearing that the Neustadt meetings would degenerate into excursions for the "city leaders" and that, since clubs and citizens had previously been left out of the meetings, the idea of the meetings would soon fall asleep again.
To counteract this, Hans Schreyegg had developed some ideas, which he presented at the Mayors' Round Table, which was organized for the first time at his suggestion: Associations are to receive non-material support, there will be a joint tourism brochure, an office will be set up and a committee to clarify further issues. With these ideas, Hans Schreyegg secured the future of the Neustadt movement and he fortunately became the first chairman of this newly founded committee, the Neustadt in Europe working group. He held this office for 30 years and filled it with a lot of passion and ideas. When he was no longer available as chairman in 2012, the first official act of Petra Bieber, his successor, was to elect Hans Schreyegg as the well-deserved honorary chairman of the Neustadt in Europe working group.
It would go beyond the scope of this article to list everything that Hans Schreyegg has done for the Neustadt family in these 30 years. The results of his and the committee's work are familiar to everyone with an affinity for Neustadt: the Neustadt Pass, Neustadt ambassador, advertising brochures, website, cookbook, town entrance signs, etc.
It should be emphasized that without his sharp mind, his thoughtful and prudent actions, the Neustadt movement would not have become what it is today. A friendship of Neustadt residents across national borders. An important contribution to a united Europe.
In his review of the development and history of the working group in 2012, Hans Schreyegg wrote:
"Europe only 'works' if we ourselves, we humans, work towards a functioning Europe. We humans must get to know our neighbors, their landscapes and also their beauties and also their history. To do this, we must visit each other, meet, talk to each other, celebrate and discuss. This is the only way to get to know and appreciate our neighbors. (...) And this is the only way to build a Europe of the people, to build our European home together! That was my and our goal!"
Neustadt in Europe is the largest city friendship of municipalities, associations and citizens of Europe from currently 36 cities, market towns and municipalities with the name "Neustadt" in seven European countries, which would not exist without Hans Schreyegg.
We Neustadt residents will always remember him with honor.
