Neustadt an der Spree
Neustadt/Spree was first mentioned approximately 330 years ago, however, this cannot be verified by documents. The settlement was founded on its current site, because the old town burned to the ground around 1650. The inhabitants looked for an appropriate “new place”, hence the name Neustadt (Sorbian “Nowe Mesto”). Especially worth mentioning is that its people are a combination of German and Sorbian citizens. The Sorbs are a national minority with their own history, language and culture. Each year the traditional “Zampern” takes place, a Sorbian tradition, as well as the Easter bonfire and the Maypole throwing.
Romantic biking and hiking routes with directional signs lead through the Auen landscape along the Spree. Unforgettably beautiful and eventful is a boat tour on the Spree. The Spreewald, the Muskauer Park and Bautzen as a Sorbian culture site are additional excursion destinations.
